Inspired by the shoreline at Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia, Northumberland Light captures a fleeting moment as weather begins to clear over the Northumberland Strait. Warm light gathers along the distant horizon, illuminating the water beneath a sky still marked by passing clouds. In the foreground, weathered stones and coastal rock formations anchor the scene, contrasting the permanence of the shoreline with the ever-changing atmosphere above.
This painting is less about a specific view than it is about a familiar Maritime experience—the quiet that follows unsettled weather, the shifting relationship between sea and sky, and the subtle beauty found in ordinary coastal landscapes. Layers of cool blues, violets, and greys are balanced by warm earth tones and reflected light, creating a sense of depth, calm, and contemplation.
Painted from photographs taken in Havre Boucher, the work reflects my ongoing fascination with Nova Scotia’s coastal geology, changing weather, and the unique quality of light found along the Northumberland Strait. It is an invitation to pause, to look beyond the obvious, and to experience the landscape as it feels as much as how it appears.
