There is something about the landscapes of Cape Breton that stays with you long after you’ve left. The familiar shorelines, the ever-changing skies, and the quiet beauty of the water carry a sense of belonging that is difficult to put into words.
The Colours of Home is inspired by the beloved Kidston Lighthouse in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, standing peacefully along the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake. Framed by windswept trees and a rugged shoreline, the lighthouse rests beneath a sweeping sky alive with warm corals, soft pinks, golden yellows, and gentle blues. These vibrant colours dance across the water, creating a reflection that blurs the line between the landscape and the emotions it evokes.
Through expressive brushstrokes, rich texture, and an imaginative use of colour, I wanted to capture more than the physical beauty of this familiar place. I wanted to convey the warmth of memories, the comfort of returning, and that unmistakable feeling of being somewhere that will always be a part of you.
The lighthouse, small yet steadfast against the expansive sky, becomes a quiet symbol of constancy and connection. While the light and seasons may change, some places remain deeply rooted in our hearts.
The Colours of Home is a celebration of Cape Breton’s natural beauty and the enduring connection we carry to the places that shape us. It is a reminder that home is not always simply where we live, but somewhere we feel, remember, and carry with us wherever life takes us.
