Wild Abundance immerses the viewer in a dense field of sunflowers at the edge of dusk. Built up in thick, deliberate layers of paint, the canvas captures dozens of blooms at every stage of turning toward the light — saturated golds and burnt oranges giving way to deep red-orange centres, with a single note of pink breaking through near the composition's heart. Above the flowers, a hushed sky of blush, lavender, and soft blue settles quietly over a distant treeline, offering a moment of calm against the exuberance below.
This piece marks a deliberate expansion of my practice. Wild Abundance grew directly out of an earlier, more intimate sunflower study — a single arrangement in a glass vase, set against a bold magenta interior. Here, I took that same close observation of colour and form and scaled it outward into an entire landscape, trading the containment of a domestic still life for the unruly sprawl of a field in full bloom. The complementary colour relationships that anchor my East Coast landscape work — the interplay of warm and cool, saturated and muted — carry through into this warmer, more textural register, while the raised, sculptural brushwork invites close viewing as much as it rewards distance.
